Community activist and pioneering Black physician James Lee Dickey is not the only African American who broke down barriers and did good deeds in eastern Williamson County. Here are many other Black leaders and historical figures – but not all — who made or are making a difference.
TONY VON
Known as the “Master Blaster,” Von worked as a deejay in Taylor for KTAE AM, a station specializing in country and rockabilly music.
Von spun gospel and blues tunes. He said he believed in playing anything by everybody, anybody and nobody.
He was known for his mellow opening, “This is Tony Von, the only colored TV on the radio.” Von also owned a record shop and was a concert promoter. He brought several notable acts to Taylor including James Brown, BB King, Johnnie Taylor, Little Richard, Etta James, Wilson Pickett, Bobby Blue Bland, and Ike and Tina Turner.
